How It Is Made

A Phad painting at full resolution - flat colour and drawn line
Step One · The Print

Printed and stretched to order, in India.

Every design is printed to order on canvas with a fine grain. The surface is semi-matte, so there is no glare from a window or a tubelight and no sheet of glass between you and the image. We print the same file for every size in a design’s ladder, so a 48 in canvas carries the same drawing as an 18 in one — larger, not softer.

Step one of four.

The Materials

What it is made of.

The Canvas

Semi-matte canvas.

A woven canvas, not paper and not board. Semi-matte through the whole surface, so the image holds up under a ceiling light without a hotspot. It is the same canvas whether the piece ends up wrapped or inside a floater frame — only the edge treatment changes.

The Stretcher

Solid pine, 25 mm.

Real pine bar with its grain and its knots — not MDF, not moulded plastic. The canvas is pulled over it and stapled under tension down the back of each bar; corners are folded rather than cut, a mitred pleat that turns the fabric round the bar and staples it out of sight.

How a Canvas Is Built

Print, stretch, frame, pack.

The print - to order, on canvas
The stretch - folded corners, stapled under tension
The frame - floater, 8 mm gap, four finishes
The pack - die-cut box, corner blocks, hanger fitted

The mount

Three ways it can arrive.

Same canvas, same stretcher, same print. Only the edge is different - and it is the one choice on every product page.

Floater frame
Floater frame A frame that holds the canvas with an 8 mm shadow gap all round, so the piece sits inside the moulding without touching it. Face 10 mm, depth 35 mm. Natural, Antique Gold, Walnut or Matt Black.
Classic frame
Classic frame The moulding sits over the edge of the canvas - a flush, traditional profile with no gap. Face 15 mm, depth 25 mm. Black, White or Gold.
Gallery wrap
Gallery wrap No frame at all. The image carries round the 25 mm pine bar and the corners are folded rather than cut, so the edge is part of the picture.

The Numbers

Published in millimetres.

  • Depth

Wrapped

  • Stretcher
Solid pine, 25 mm - real grain and knots

The Pack

Sixteen die-cut boxes, one per rectangle.

Every size has a box cut for it — sixteen dielines across six box codes — so nothing rattles and nothing bends in transit. Corner blocks on all four corners, a wrap over the face, and the hanger already on the bar. You take it out and hang it.
